Beast (Six Stories, #4 ) by Matt Wesolowski

From Goodreads

Elusive online journalist Scott King examines the chilling case of a young vlogger found frozen to death in the legendary local ‘vampire tower’, in another explosive episode of Six Stories…

In the wake of the 'Beast from the East' cold snap that ravaged the UK in 2018, a grisly discovery was made in a ruin on the Northumbrian coast. Twenty-four-year-old vlogger, Elizabeth Barton, had been barricaded inside what locals refer to as 'The Vampire Tower', where she was later found frozen to death.

Three young men, part of an alleged 'cult', were convicted of this terrible crime, which they described as a 'prank gone wrong'. However, in the small town of Ergarth, questions have been raised about the nature of Elizabeth Barton's death and whether the three convicted youths were even responsible.

Elusive online journalist Scott King speaks to six witnesses – people who knew both the victim and the three killers – to peer beneath the surface of the case. He uncovers whispers of a shocking online craze that held the young of Ergarth in its thrall and drove them to escalate a series of pranks in the name of internet fame. He hears of an abattoir on the edge of town, which held more than simple slaughter behind its walls, the tragic and chilling legend of the ‘Ergarth Vampire'…

Both a compulsive, taut and terrifying thriller, and a bleak and distressing look at modern society's desperation for attention, Beast will unveil a darkness from which you may never return…

My thoughts

I gave this a 4.5 stars or 9/10.  The Six Stories series are all based around separate incidents and can be read as stand alone reads, but why would you do that. You can check out the reviews of the previous books on my blog. Links to the reviews will be posted at the end of this review.

Beast is the 4th book in the Six Stories series which features Scott King an online journalist with an interest in trying to help solve crimes that have occurred.  He presents his findings as a series of podcasts.  In this story Scott is trying to find out what happened to a 24 year old vlogger, called Elizabeth Barton who decided to take part in an online craze, that many young people were becoming involved in where online pranks began to escalate in severity and as a result possibly loss of life, for one reason or another.  The events took place in 2018 when we all experienced the severe weather conditions that became known as the 'Beast from the East.'

When Elizabeth's body is found frozen to death inside the tower known to the locals the 'Vampire Tower', who is to blame?  As three locals are convicted of the crime, King goes on a quest to find out more about what happened on the night she died and to try to determine whether the three men are actually to blame as many people feel that they weren't actually responsible and have been falsely convicted.  Can King solve the mystery that the Police may not have actually solved?

This series is great and I can thoroughly recommend them all.  Beast is no different to them in any way at all.  Wesolowski has a way with him of drawing you in to the narrative that he is weaving around the story contained within the pages of each book.  He has an unusual way of telling the story that he is telling, but it works well and engages the reader well making you want to keep reading in order to find out what has actually happened as things are never what they at first appear to be.
