From Goodreads

While Martha Hamble gets to grips with being Governor of City 42, Kira and Jed Jenkins travel to City 15 but they are not prepared for what they find. Corporation are tightening their grip on those who don't conform, threatening to split families and reassign the natural born children. With Gaia weakened, the group of friends must try to find a safe place to live and help the spirit of the Earth recover but everything stands against them. Will Corporation succeed in their tougher regime or can Kira and her friends find a new home?

My thoughts

My thanks to the Author via TBConFB for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review. I gave this a well deserved 8/10 or 4 /5 stars.

This is the second in The Gaia Collection, which started with the Gaia Effect. Set in a dystopian future, where babies aren't conceived and born the normal way, they are normally created by others due to certain specifications that the parents choose. The Corporation looks after everything for people and it's as if people are superfluous to life in many ways.

As people are beginning to have babies naturally, they are beginning to wonder if all is not as it seems. A group of parents with naturally born children are becoming suspicious of all that they are being told. With the threat of their children possibly being taken from them and given to others, they decide to try to get away from the Corporation and all it stands for. Leaving the City they travel to other Cities to see what is happening and whether they might be able to forge a new life elsewhere.

I really enjoyed this second part, if I'm completely honest I found the first bit a little slow going, but from nowhere the story seemed to take off. I was completely engaged with it and at one point I was in tears due to circumstances beyond the control of Kira and her friends. I really felt for the people involved. At times the story felt a little claustrophobic and it sure was thought provoking in my opinion.

I can't wait for the next instalment, please Claire Buss when we will have the next one to read?
