Barbed Wire and Daisies (The Lost Land Series Book #1) by Teresa Schulz

Barbed Wire and Daisies (The Lost Land Series Book 1) by [Schulz, Teresa]

From Amazon

Barbed Wire and Daisies is a novel set in future rural New Zealand. The tale starts in the year 2030 as world wide oil supplies come to a grinding halt overnight. There are now hoards of starving, desperate people in the overcrowded cities. Looting, violence and chaos become rife. Living in a remote valley, Gen is a kick ass, protective mother who, along with husband Nate, will stop at nothing to defend her family and protect what is hers from the depraved, sometimes cannibalistic survivors who come crawling out of the cities to the countryside, in search of food. It soon becomes survival of the fittest. Who will win?

My thoughts

My thanks to the Author and TBConFB for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I gave this an 8/10 or 4 stars.

Whilst this book is the first in The Lost Land Series it could be read as a standalone. However, why would you just want to read the first in a series when there are more to follow?

The year is 2030 and the world's oil supply is running out, overnight the supply dries up, as the ramifications of this begin to set in. It's not long before the food supplies are fast running out too, with the lack of transport to deliver food around the country. With looting, rioting, violence and chaos in the cities becoming a regular occurrence.

Gen is a strong female character, a much loved daughter and Mother. She lives in rural New Zealand with her husband Nate and extended family. They soon learn that in order to survive they have to learn to defend what they own and those that are dear to them.

As the population begins to starve some of those that have survived turn to cannibalism, as there is still a supply of human flesh left to eat.

This dystopian themed story deals with several topics that seriously need considering now, not just in the future. How would the world cope, if and when the oil supply runs out? It would be hoped that by the time it happened, that alternative means of powering vehicles had been found.

Teresa Schulz handles the topics she talks about in this story well and the developing storyline keeps you reading, as you are left wanting to know more.
