‘REPENT BEFORE YOU DIE … OR MAY YOU NEVER R.I.P.’
Threatening plaques, vigilante killings, a Jewish community in an English town – what’s the link? The clock is ticking to the next murder.
After witnessing a racist incident in a small Hertfordshire town, journalist Shanna Regan uncovers a series of threatening fake historical plaques. Each plaque highlights someone’s misdemeanour rather than a good deed.
Delving deeper, Shanna discovers these plaques are linked to vigilante killings spanning several decades, with ties to the local Jewish community.
As her search for the truth becomes personal, Shanna puts her own life in danger. Can she stop the next murder in time?
The Redeemer is a compelling, thought-provoking murder mystery debut, featuring themes of prejudice and racism, heritage and identity, revenge and redemption, and secrets from the past. Victoria Goldman was given an honourable mention for The Redeemer in the Capital Crime/DHH Literary Agency New Voices Award 2019.
My thoughts
My thanks to the Author for a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
The cover is perfect and when you read the story for yourself, you will realise why I mention this comment. This is a debut novel by Victoria Goldman featuring Shanna Regan an unlikely heroine in many ways due to all her flaws, issues and secrets. Shanna is a journalist by profession, yet she has a yen for using her powers as a journalist as an investigator and crime solver. When unexplained plaques appear that resemble historic plaques, yet these plaques are different in the way that they relate to local people and events. What's the significance to the local area of these plaques? Shanna finds her inquisitive brain soon sees her in the thick of it and at times she feels as if someone is pulling her strings as events start to happen, which steer her in certain directions. She is not sure who she can and can't trust as she delves deeper.
I enjoyed this debut novel from Victoria Goldman and I am sure that she will write more. The story takes us on a journey of discovery with Shanna Regan, as she finds herself in the thick of this murder mystery. The story has elements of racial prejudices, violence, revenge and redemption. It is thought provoking in many ways and would make a great reading group read in my opinion.
' "Does Mark really believe in an eye for an eye?" I ask the spider. "Is it wrong to do a bad thing to a bad person for a good reason?'' ' This quote in my eyes asks the perfect question and is one that at times many of us must think about. How many of us at times would like to act in such a way?
I am sure that this is not the first and only time that we will be in the company of Shanna Regan and look forward to seeing where she takes us next.
