Normal Rules Don't Apply by Kate Atkinson

From Goodreads

The first story collection from Kate Atkinson in twenty years, Normal Rules Don't Apply is a dazzling array of eleven interconnected tales from the bestselling author of Shrines of Gaiety and Life After Life

In this first full collection since Not the End of the World, we meet a queen who makes a bargain she cannot keep; a secretary who watches over the life she has just left; a man whose luck changes when a horse speaks to him.

With clockwork intricacy, inventiveness and sharp social observation, Kate Atkinson conjures a feast for the imagination, a constantly changing multiverse in which nothing is quite as it seems.

My thoughts

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from Alison Barrow, PR for Transworld Books and Doubleday Books UK.

This book sat on my TBR mountain for some time before I finally got to it. What a roller coaster of a ride this book takes you on.  It is a collection of loosely connected short stories that will have you wondering what it is that you're reading as you turn the pages.

If you enjoy fantastical stories that take you away from normal day to day life, then this is completely the right sort of book for you to grab.  It is one that you can pick up and read a story at a time if you have 20/30 minutes to spare as the stories are better read in one sitting to  get the most out of them.

Whilst I enjoyed some of the stories, there are some that I didn't engage with quite as well. Am I glad that I read it?  I would probably say, yes.  I can say though that this will not be the book for everyone depending on what genres you enjoy reading.
