From Goodreads
My mother.
At night, my mother creaks. The house creaks along with her.Through our thin shared wall, I can hear the makings of my mother gurgle through her body just like the water in the walls of the house...
Teenage Aoileann has never left the island. Her silent, bed-bound mother is a wreckage, the survivor of a private disaster no one will speak about.
Aoileann desperately wants a family, and when Sarah and her three young children move to the island, Aoileann finds a focus for her relentless love.
A horror story about being bound by the blood knot of family.
My thoughts
My thanks to Helen Richardson for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review in order to be able to take part in the blog tour of this book.
Aoileann cares for her bed bound mother, her life isn't an easy one at all as day in day out nothing changes. She needs more from life than being a carer. When a young Mum arrives on the island with her children. Aoileann sees someone in who she can share her life with, that may take her away from her daily routine.
This is a horror story that will keep you reading as you need to know more about what is going on. It's a slow burner story that isn't heavy on action, it's more of a character driven story that gets under your skin. As you read you can feel the tension in the air between the characters as they struggle to cope with life and all that it has in store for them. At times you don't know if what you are reading is happening among the real characters or if there is something else hanging around, watching them.
I enjoyed this story, at times it reminded me a little of The Wicker Man a horror film that's also set on an island, the plot isn't the same at all though. It was the setting of The Wicker Man being on an island and how the life on the island seemed a little bit odd at times for the characters of the film. That is how I found the story and how life seemed to be a little odd for Aoileann. There was tension in the air and you couldn't put your finger on what the cause of the tension was as you read the story.
I can thoroughly recommend this story to others who enjoy a good read, that will take them away from our day to day life and make us think what others go through, how things affect them both literally and in their heads.
