The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal

From Goodreads

London. 1850. The greatest spectacle the city has ever seen is being built in Hyde Park, and among the crowd watching two people meet. For Iris, an aspiring artist, it is the encounter of a moment - forgotten seconds later, but for Silas, a collector entranced by the strange and beautiful, that meeting marks a new beginning.

When Iris is asked to model for pre-Raphaelite artist Louis Frost, she agrees on the condition that he will also teach her to paint. Suddenly her world begins to expand, to become a place of art and love.

But Silas has only thought of one thing since their meeting, and his obsession is darkening . . .

My thoughts

I grabbed a copy of this via BorrowBox the digital lending side of my local Library.

I gave this a 4 stars or 8/10.

This was an engaging read that starts off quite a gentle historical read, but then takes a rather dark turn.  Iris becomes a model for Louis Frost and artist and as part of her agreement to model, she wants to learn to paint.  As Iris becomes involved in the Art world, she meets people as part of her new life.

Silas is also involved to some extent in the Art world he is a collector, but what does he collect?  As the reader gets more involved with the life of Silas and all his darkness, we become aware of just how dark things could and do get.

To say you enjoyed reading this might not be quite the right word to use, but on the whole I did enjoy this and I feel that it would make a great drama or film as I can imagine that it would transfer well to the large or small screen.
