The Darkness (Hidden Iceland #1) by Ragnar Jonasson

From Goodreads

At sixty-four, Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir of the Reykjavik Police is about to take on her last case before she retires: A young woman, an asylum seeker from Russia, found murdered on the seaweed covered rocks of the Vatnsleysuströnd in Iceland.

When Hulda starts to ask questions it isn't long before she realizes that no one can be trusted, and that no one is telling the whole truth. Spanning Reykjavik, the Icelandic highlands and the cold, isolated fjords, The Darkness is a thrilling new crime thriller from one of the biggest new names in Scandi noir.

My thoughts

I borrowed this book from my local Library.  I gave this a 4 stars or 8/10.

The Darkness is the first in the Hidden Iceland series by Ragnar Jonasson, he writes in his native tongue and the story has been translated by Victoria Cribb.  The Hidden Iceland series features an older lady as the main character, Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir is approaching retirement.  At 64 years of age most members of the police will have retired, but Hulda is unlike most.

As Hulda soon discovers on asking the questions that she needs answers to, in order to solve the crimes that she is investigating, that people aren't telling her everything and she realises that she needs to work out who to trust and who to believe.

This was an enjoyable read and there was far more to it than the crimes that Hulda was trying to solve.  I enjoyed her interaction with her colleagues and felt that the reader learned quite a bit about Hulda and her past.

Told in several parts and with a mix of shorter and longer chapters, the way it's told makes you want to keep reading and reading.  I will be looking out for more books by this Author.
