Dark Pines (Tuva Moodyson Mystery #1) by Will Dean

From Goodreads

An isolated Swedish town. A deaf reporter terrified of nature. A dense spruce forest overdue for harvest. A pair of eyeless hunters found murdered in the woods.

It’s week one of the Swedish elk hunt and the sound of gunfire is everywhere. When Tuva Moodyson investigates the story that could make her career she stumbles on a web of secrets that knit Gavrik town together. Are the latest murders connected to the Medusa killings twenty years ago? Is someone following her? Why take the eyes? Tuva must face her demons and venture deep into the woods to stop the killer and write the story. And then get the hell out of Gavrik.

My thoughts

I gave this a 5 stars or 10/10.

Dark Pines is the first in a mystery series, starring Tuva Moodyson a deaf Swedish reporter. As a series of murders occur in Gavrik, it's not long before people are wondering if they are connected to the Medusa killings that happened twenty years ago. As some similarities between the murders then and now appear to link them together, Tuva uses her skills as a reporter to sniff out the story and in so doing becomes quite instrumental in helping to solve the crime. She never once lets the fact that she's deaf get in the way of following a story, even though at times she does appear to have some minor problems with her hearing aids, which I felt she often used to her advantage.

I enjoyed this story and due to the descriptive nature of the Swedish surroundings and countryside, almost felt that I was stood by Tuva's side as she went about on her day to day business. Will Dean has embarked on a journey with Tuva and he's keen for readers to join him on the journey. This reader will certainly be going on the journey with him and I hope that I might tempt you to take it with us.
