The Awakening (Trojan Gene #1) by Meg Buchanan

From Goodreads

Trojan Gene is set in a dystopian world, where a genetic engineering disaster has caused infertility in most countries. The few fertile populations left are quarantined and managed by the Administration and Vector as breeding stock for the rest of the world.

Jack Fraser, eighteen years old, is desperate to prove himself to the leader of the resistance movement, Jacob, so he can fight the Administration. Instead Jacob puts him in charge of protecting Ela, Jacob’s sixteen year old granddaughter.

Ela is the answer to the world’s infertility problems, her mother isn’t a Local, but Ela was conceived naturally, she is proof the infertility can be reversed. The Administration knows about Ela’s existence and send an agent Carlos Vincent to eliminate her.

Jack and Ela discover a seed vault built by their fathers, to protect biodiversity. The Willis brothers who work for Carlos Vincent, capture Ela and make her take them to the Vault, intending to destroy it.

My thoughts

My thanks to the Author for the chance to read this in exchange for an honest review via TBConFB Reviewers Group.

What a great start to the Trojan Gene series aimed at the YA market. I gave this a 4 stars or 8/10.

I have to admit that I love reading dystopian themed reads and this fits the bill nicely. The Awakening relates the story of how a future world is left mostly infertile due to an engineering disaster. How certain populations that are still fertile, are now used to help repopulate the world.

When Jack Fraser, is given the task of acting like a bodyguard to Ela. It's not what he was expecting to be doing, but given the importance of her to the future existence of the human race it's a job that he  undertakes to the best of his ability. Due to how Ela came into existence herself, she poses a problem to the Administration and it's not too long before her life is in danger as a result of this.

As Jack and Ela realise that their fathers had both been involved in the development of a vault to protect seeds from development, it's not long before the vault is out in jeopardy as certain people would prefer to see it destroyed.

This was an interesting read that had me hooked and wanting to see how the developing relationship between Jack the protector and Ela the protected would develop and if they themselves would end up being creators of future generations. To find out some of this, I need to read further books in the series as all my questions haven't been answered yet!
