The Espionage Effect by Kat & Stone Bastion

The Espionage Effect

From Goodreads

When desire sets you free…control is a matter of perception.

I'm Devin Hill.

Darkness taints my soul.

I'm suffocating. Drowning.

The sweet promise of air? Pure illusion.

Tested as a genius at age seven, I hide my emotions, become what they expect...bury my secrets. At nineteen, I trudge toward a predestined path, blinders on, heart safeguarded.

Until I dare to be wild.

Until Alec Marquez crashes into my world.

Until all that follows redefines everything I've ever known.

What happens when you stumble into a world of spies...and discover you belong there?

My thoughts

My thanks to the Publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I gave this an 8/10, if the start had gripped me as much as the rest of the book then it would have been higher. It took a while setting the scene and I found it hard going at first, but once the action started it was another story completely.

Devin Hill has a higher than average IQ. Her parents are trying to push her into a safe occupation but she yearns for adventure. She embarks on a holiday with her best friend Anna. They have plans to make this an adventurous holiday in more ways than one!

Alec Marquez is a hot blooded male with an eye for more than adventure.

As Devin and Alec's paths cross, Devin spies in him more than an adventure, she is attracted to him. She soon becomes embroiled in his life which is a far cry from her own. Alec is reluctant for her to become to involved in his life as his way of life is one of danger and intrigue. Devin is keen to take on certain aspects of his life and proves to be an asset more than a hindrance. Her higher than normal IQ and analytical mind prove to be very helpful to Alec.

As the story progresses Devin learns things about her life, that she wasn't aware of. Something that she blamed herself for that happened in the past, has some light shed on it and it makes her more determined to do what she wants in life rather than what others would have her do.

I enjoyed the developing relationship between Devin and Alec both sides of the covers. I so wanted them to end up together and at times I wasn't sure how things would progress. The writing style is seamless and moves easily from one chapter to another.

With some similarities to On Her Majesty's Secret Service by Ian Fleming. It is a true adventure story of epic proportions with villains aplenty.

This is a completely different genre and style of story to the No Wedding series by Kat & Stone Bastion. Although it's being sold as a stand alone I can't help hoping that they might write a follow up as I'd like a few questions answered please. I suppose that I can live in hope.
